My name is Emily Buchanan. I am an Intermediate and Senior Phase educator with my honors degree in inclusive education.
Integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into my teaching is all about bridging classroom theory with the real-world environmental challenges my learners face every day. Rather than treating sustainability as an abstract concept, I want to focus on pressing local issues like water security, energy literacy, and local biodiversity. By guiding my learners through catchment health, climate resilience, and native ecosystems alongside Indigenous Knowledge Systems, I can help them see how ecological health directly impacts their own lives and communities.
Equally important to me is empowering my learners with practical, action-oriented skills that build real-world resilience. I plan to bring topics like waste reduction, the circular economy, and food security directly into my lessons through hands-on projects like school vegetable gardens, composting, and upcycling. By weaving these key issues across my subjects, I hope to equip my learners not just with environmental knowledge, but with the practical problem-solving tools they need to build a more sustainable future.
